Algoma Calls
It was the Agawa Canyon tour train that first peaked my interest in visiting Algoma country. The rail line has been in operation since 1899 serving all points between Sault Ste. Marie and Hearst, Ontario. In 2015 it became a tour train service exclusively, operating from early August until mid October each year offering views of colourful autumn leaves as well as landscapes made famous by the Canadian artists, the Group of Seven. I decided that this was the year I was going to go. This simple train ride soon changed into a whole lot more than I could ever have imagined.
My adventure began at Chutes Provincial Park located in Massey, Ontario, between Sudbury and Sault Ste Marie. My plan was to take in as many points of interest as I could in the Algoma region before they closed for the season, and I was playing ‘beat the clock’. I left my residence in Whitby, Ontario on October 9th and taking the scenic route to the Trans Canada Highway, arrived at the park five hours later. I had seen many amazing photos of the Chutes, or waterfalls, and now was about to have a first hand look and take my own photos. I quickly found the parking area, then embarking on the Twin Bridges Trail, it wasn’t long before I felt the magic of this natural setting.
