Satellite Communicator
For many of us living in urban areas we rely on cell phone signals so much that once we encounter the wilderness and we’re without that signal we’re a bit lost. This is where a satellite communicator can be a real life saver. My satellite communicator Garmin Inreach offers two way communication. Your loved ones can can stay in touch and track your progress. If you have an emergency, Garmin’s communications centre can contact rescue authorities while letting you know their status. Garmin uses the Iridium satellite network which offers the best global signal coverage. Recently iPhone offered a satellite service but it doesn’t offer the same coverage and may not be available when you need it most. What I didn’t realize until I bought the unit was the power of the Explorer app. It ties the Inreach into your cell phone making texting easier, tracks your hikes and offers mapping services. After falling and fracturing my wrist on a solo hike, I feel much safer with a satellite communicator Garmin Inreach.
The cost:
About $450 for the unit
Yearly fee about $50
Monthly service plans $20 – 90. You can opt in and out as you require.
